Hey so I’m thinking I should keep this updated more. So many things have happened. We’ve been here for 10 days and it already feels like home. This place is great.
My bag came in- like 3 days late so it’s been good. And I figured out what was wrong with my camera so I can finally take pictures! Yay!
So the club/bar scene here is super fun. There’s this part of town called North Bridge and it’s basically the place to go on weekends, actually any day to be honest. Australian’s here can become your best friend so quickly. Everyone is always ready for a convo. During O-Week we went to this amazing nation park called Caversham. Basically the highlight of my trip here- so far. We got to feed kangaroos (which are SUPER friendly- unlike Australians described them), pet koalas
, and pet an adorable wombat!!!!!!
But yea another thing I learned is that Australians eat a lot of hot dogs.
I tried kangaroo meat… It’s not that great to be honest. It’s got a really rich and almost like gummy taste. I didn’t like it. I have yet to try vegemite… I’m trying to leave it to the last possible second but I feel like I should just try it and get it over with to say I’ve tried it. Everyone that has tasted it has almost gagged and thrown up. So yea not a good thing. Vegemite is this like popular spread here made out of yeast… It looks like nutella but smells like shit (and apparently tastes like that as well…
But anyway. After Caversham I was like a little kid that was given too many pixie sticks. I was so happy. We also went to the beach where we had to be given a lesson on rip tides by a lifeguard (or life saver as they call them). I was imagining we were going to get a talk from this super hot Australian ripped lifeguard. But no… it was like a 60 year old man that then joined us on the beach in his speedo.
Yea…
But anyway, the water is freezzzzing. I’m going to miss Miami Beach water a lot. It’s like in the high 50s? Almost everyone got in. I don’t know how they did it! But some people got to surf a bit so they got that out of their system.
Oh yea it’s the Indian Ocean my feet were in. Nbd. haha
Classes here are pretty chill. I’ll have to do a lot of work on my own but there’s just 1 exam in most of them and some papers. Labs are also between 1hr to 1hr and 45mins. SO much better than 3 or 4 hour labs back at ND…
Oh and just in case anyone was wondering, Australians don’t grind. So when all us Americans roll into a club and start grinding we look like freaks. But, they still buy us drinks so it’s all good.
I actually have to listen to a lecture online because I have two lectures at the same time, so I have to pick and choose which one I want to go to. I have one class (immunology) in the Med school and it’s super far away. So unless I get a bike soon I’ll probably just listen to the lecture online. They don’t call their professors, professors, but actually just lecturer.
They do say heap and cheers a lot btw. It keeps getting warmer here. It’s amazing weather. I shouldn’t of brought any sweaters. Oh yea they walk and drive on the left side here. I almost got run over because I looked to my left instead of my right when crossing the road. Slowly getting used to it. Oh and it is compulsory to wear helmets here.. (and they say compulsory instead of required and they say I have a query for question hehe.)
I discovered that this song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wavpWRK6IX8 is literally the best song in the world.
Food is really healthy here. The cups are like literally 8oz. Very frustrating because I drink a shit ton more than that…And they only have apple juice, orange juice, water and these fruit slushies at the DH. No soda. I had coke for the first time since I was here yesterday. Realized I missed it. I miss bagels too strangely lol.
The cereal is so healthy here, so obviously it sucks lol. Anyway, I have a really hipster professor for Philosophy. He went to the Uni (they call it Uni here- they abbreviate everything) of Massachusetts. Super hipster and dramatic. Should be entertaining.
Anyway I am jamming to we speak no americano right now. So gotta go listen to a lecture on Human Reproductive Systems.
Peniiiiiiiiis! (seemed appropriate..)
So I absolutely love this city! Perth is so amazing.
Australians are the shit. So far the ones I’ve met have been amazing. So friendly, so chill, nothing really pisses them off haha.
Ok wait this is typical me to start a story from the middle and then go back to the actual beginning or then skip to the end. Sorry I’ll try to do better so it’s not so confusing.
So trip began in Miami where my flight to LA was delayed 3 hours. Thankfully American put my in another flight that left at 4:30, but ended up leaving at 5:30. -_- Another thing I found out was that American is sister airlines with Qantas so I didn’t have to pay for my suitcases which was nice.
My carry on was SO HEAVY. I over packed like crazy. Whatever though I’m sure I’ll use everything lol, if not I get to carry it back again.
Anyway flight- got to LA right on time- LA airport people are super nice. I hate MIA.
Met with a group of ND kids. Edie had texted me thankfully and then after a 5 hour flight, go on the 15 hour flight to Sydney. Sat next to Edie and Sam, I was in the middle fml- but the seats were comfortable. After dinner I popped to Advil PMs and slept for about 6 hours thinking alright that was good should be done soon- but I check and there are still 7 hours left. I was so annoyed of just sitting there and I didn’t feel like watching movies and then I had to pee and I felt bad waking Sam up. But anyway made it through the flight. Only one of my bags came in- awesome… Half the group made it on the flight to Perth and the other half didn’t because of customs so we had to wait two hours for the other flight.
In the airport there was a Hungry Jacks which is literally a BK- same design and such but it’s called Hungry Jacks. Really funny. I would upload a picture but my camera has decided not to work. I don’t know why it didn’t get banged up or anything. Really pissed about that..
Anyway when we get to Perth only one bag arrived again… I had to do the claims and I was so tried and mad- well that ended and I ended up having to take a bus with another girl from Illinois because the other kids had gone ahead since I was doing the bag claim.
Perth is so awesome!!! The architecture is so cool, everything looks like it’s supposed to be there, the way they planned the city is perfect- and the people are really friendly and always happy which is always a plus.
My dorm room is pretty sweet and a ton of closet space. And the bed is so comfy! Thank God.
They’ve kept us pretty busy. We’ve gone on tours, into the city, orientation (which sucked. It was like 6 hours of people talking to us and bombarding us with information)
I learned a “typical” Australian greeting: G’dai howyagoin
They smush, abbreviate, and pretty much say things in the easiest way possible. It’s great but sometimes I have no idea what they say. I like end up looking at them and nodding but I did not understand a word. I’m sure in a couple more days I’ll get the hang of it. Oh and they call everyone mate and say cheers a lot lol. It’s really entertaining to hear.
I have to register for classes tomorrow… So I’m going to go to sleep soon because yesterday was pretty crazy and I’m exhausted. These people party hardcore. It was a Monday and the club was packed.
Hopefully I’ll have more to say and write soon!
I still don’t think I’m cool enough for tumblr but whatevs. Ciao
Oh I met an italian yesterday! But I don’t remember him lol…
